In fact, they’re now making plans to take that casino online — with an eye on competing in New Jersey’s more than $200 million-a-year online gambling market.
The saga of Revel Casino Hotel is well documented. Construction of the $2.4 billion upscale casino resort was fraught with financial and labor issues. The project was scaled back and delayed several times.
It opened to great fanfare on April 2, 2012. However, after declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice in a little over two years, it shut down on Sept. 2, 2014.
A deal to sell Revel to Brookfield Asset Management at auction for $110 million fell apart. Then, on April 7, 2015, Florida developer Glenn Straub bought it out of bankruptcy for just $82 million.
Straub made plans to reopen Revel under the name TEN. He set and missed several reopening dates over the next two years while mired in a battle with state regulators over casino licensing.
The TEN social casino website
Straub did manage to open up a social casino website in 2017. Play.TenACNJ.com is a partnership with international online casino software giant GAN.
The play money casino site was expected to be the precursor to a real-money New Jersey online gambling site. It would launch when TEN finally opened. Ultimately, it never did.
AC Ocean Walk announced in early January of this year it had acquired the former Revel Casino Hotel for $200 million. The property will be re-branded again, this time as the Ocean Resort Casino. The plan is to open in the summer of 2018.
Now, AC Ocean Walk and GAN have announced they plan to jump right into real money regulated online gaming business together. The new site will join the 23 other online gambling websites currently operating in New Jersey in the first half of this year.
That means it could possibly open before Ocean Resort Casino does.
The question is: What will an Ocean Resort Casino online gambling portal powered by GAN’s online gambling software platform look like?
The answer is: Probably a lot like the one GAN already provides in New Jersey.
GAN, Betfair, and NJ online gambling
Since 2002, GAN has been offering turnkey software solutions for online gambling operators all over the world. They have been in business with New Jersey’s Betfair online casino since it launched in November 2013. GAN provides Betfair with its online gambling software platform.
Betfair originally launched under Trump Plaza’s internet gambling license. Trump Plaza closed in September 2014, and Betfair found a temporary home with Caesars Interactive. Later, the site permanently moved to operate under Golden Nugget Atlantic City‘s internet gambling license.
Betfair did have an online poker room using its own proprietary software as well. However, that site shut down in December 2014. GAN doesn’t run online poker software on its platform. As a result, Ocean Resort Casino isn’t likely to get in on that side of the NJ online gambling business.
However, it is likely to feature hundreds of online slots and electronic table games similar to what players find on Betfair.
Betfair has a reputation as the site with the most unique content in the NJ online gambling market. In fact, it has long had the largest collection of site-exclusive games in the market. Now, Betfair may be forced to give up a lot of its exclusivity as Ocean Resort Casino becomes the second NJ online gambling site to use the GAN software platform.[i15-table tableid="11651"]
Betfair also has several third-party gambling software partnerships providing it with additional game titles. It remains to be seen if Ocean Resort Casino will do the same.
Betfair offers more than 150 slots, 12 table games, and eight different video poker variants. Ocean Resort Casino’s online gambling site will start with at least that. It will include all the top grossing online slot titles and classic casino games such as blackjack and roulette.
However, certain games, such as Hi-Lo Solitare and PokerBet, have always been unique to Betfair in NJ. That site might want to keep it that way.
Ocean Resort Casino and legal sports betting
One thing we do know for sure is that Ocean Resort Casino will likely be one of the first online gambling sites in the state to offer sports betting. That’s if the practice of sports betting becomes legal.
The state is currently awaiting a decision in its Supreme Court case seeking to overturn a federal ban on sports betting. GAN will jump right into the market if New Jersey wins. It launched a strategic relationship with sports betting solutions provider SBTech earlier this year.
GAN plans to integrate SBTech sports betting software into its platform everywhere it legally can. If the NJ market opens up, an Ocean Resort Casino online gambling site will be a part of that.
Marketing, branding, promotions, and certain games will no doubt remain different between the two GAN-powered NJ online gambling sites. However, there’s little doubt Ocean Resort Casino will launch with a similar interface to that of Betfair. Plus, players can expect to find a desktop and mobile app client with relatively similar functionality.
After all, by partnering with GAN to launch a real-money online gambling site, Ocean Resort Casino is saying it has no plans to reinvent the wheel. It just wants its fair share of it.
