Week 16 was an epic Sunday in the Tri-state area, as it was the only slate of the 2019 season in which the New York Giants, New York Jets, and Philadelphia Eagles picked up wins. Fantastic!

The Jets hung on to win a tight finish at home over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Giants needed overtime to put away the pesky Washington Redskins, and the Eagles stood tall against the Dallas Cowboys in a win that provided the upper hand in the NFC East division race.

In beating the Cowboys, the Eagles took a huge step to control their destiny for the division title. A victory this Sunday at Met Life vs the Giants would cement Philly’s playoff spot.

The Eagles’ playoff scenarios look like this:

  • Eagles Win/Dallas Win or Loss: Eagles make the playoffs
  • Eagles Lose/Dallas Loses (home vs Redskins): Eagles make the playoffs
  • Eagles Lose/Dallas Wins; Cowboys make the playoffs

How should New Jersey sports betting fans approach the Eagles vs Giants match-up?

Facts and trends to consider ahead of Sunday

Giants QB Daniel Jones Has Never Faced the Eagles

The rookie was injured in Week 14 when the Eagles staged a furious 2nd half comeback to beat the Giants in overtime. This will be the first time “Danny Dimes” faces the Eagles.

As the teams meet for the final time this decade, the Eagles hold a 15-4 record over the Giants. So it’s conceivable that Jones could restore the Giants’ winning ways over the Eagles.

The Eagles have rolled through the NFC East

The NFL scheduling gods handed the Eagles four straight division games to close out their regular season schedule.

On the heels of wins over the Giants, Redskins, and Cowboys, there’s reason to believe the Eagles will continue their winning streak in East Rutherford.

Green and Black and Blue

Both the Eagles and Giants are dealing with injuries heading into the final week.

For the Giants Corey Ballentine, Lorenzo Carter, Alec Ogletree, and Mike Remmers missed practice earlier in the week. Darius Slayton and Nick Gates were also limited in practice.

The Eagles, whose injuries at offensive positions have been well documented this season, will welcome Jordan Howard back to the lineup.

Concerns still exist, however, for the status of offensive line stalwart Lane Johnson and all-world tight end Zach Ertz. The seventh-year Eagle is dealing with sore ribs suffered in Week 16.

It will be important to monitor each team’s published injury updates heading into Sunday’s game at 4:25 p.m.

The NFL Local Line

The highlight for betting on the NFL this week will be the Eagles vs Giants game.

The NFL has altered the schedule so that that the Giants/Eagles and Cowboys/Redskins games will both kick-off at 4:25 p.m. The Jets close out their season by traveling to Buffalo looking to avenge their Week 2 loss to the Bills.

Here are the current local betting lines as of Thursday afternoon via DraftKings:

Sunday’s NFL schedule has eight 1:00 p.m. starts and seven 4:00 p.m. window games.

The Sunday night game features the San Francisco 49ers at the Seattle Seahawks with the NFC West title on the line. This will be the last game of the regular season game before the playoffs begin.

My 3 Picks – from the Jersey Side

My hopes of getting back to .500 for the year were dashed, as my 2-1 result locks in a sub-.500 result in 2019.

I clicked with the Denver Broncos and the Indianapolis Colts both winning and covering on Sunday.

But the Vikings let me down, as Kirk Cousins did Kirk Cousins things in their home loss on Monday night to the Packers.

My Week 16 recap

Week 2-1, Season YTD 22-25-1

  • Broncos -6.5 over Lions (Broncos 27, Lions 17)
  • Colts -7 over Panthers (Colts 38, Panthers 6)
  • Vikings -5.5 over Packers (Packers 23, Vikings 10)

My Week 17 Selections

Here are my picks for this week:

Chiefs -8.5 over Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs have become a juggernaut in the second half of the season, and look to enter the playoffs with their 6th straight win.

However, there may be a question of how long Mahomes stays in the game against the reeling Los Angeles Chargers. Anthony Lynn’s squad has lost five of their last six games.

Bengals +3 over Browns

The Cincinnati Bengals have secured the rights to the 1st overall pick in the 2020 draft.

Armed with the top pick and momentum from a Week 16 rally in Miami, the Bengals will let it all hang out against their division rival Sunday. The Cleveland Browns will mercifully close out a disappointing 2019 campaign.

Steelers -2 over Ravens

Sometimes you just look at the line and go with it. The Baltimore Ravens have locked down the #1 seed in the AFC and will be resting most, if not all of their starters.

The Pittsburgh Steelers need this win in Baltimore to get into the playoffs. After losing Ben Roethlisberger in Week 2, it’s remarkable that Pittsburgh has made it to this point. I’m hoping Steelers coach Mike Tomlin can lead the Steelers to a win and playoff berth.
