Super Bowl 54 game day ended up being extremely busy for NJ sportsbooks. Garden State gamblers wagered $54.2 million on the big game.
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement released the preliminary numbers Monday night.
And what a game it ended up being.
The Kansas City Chiefs were trailing 20-10 with 2:35 left in the third quarter. The Chiefs won 31-20, with all three touchdowns coming in the final 6:13.
Bettors who took the Niners moneyline, or the 1.5 points, saw those potential winnings vanish within minutes.
In terms of revenue, the 17 NJ mobile apps and 10 retail sportsbooks lost a combined $4.2 million. It amounts to a negative 7.8% hold percentage.
Nevada’s numbers, which are scheduled to be released today, are expected to be significantly higher.
Super Bowl is big in NJ but not nearly as big as in Las Vegas. Vegas will do almost 3x this in handle. https://t.co/0zOfdg7L7l

More NJ sports betting options
Last year, the attention was centered around the fact of it being the first time NJ customers could legally wager on the Super Bowl.
At the same time, only three casinos and two racetracks had permanent sportsbooks set up. There were a total of 11 NJ mobile apps compared to 17 this time around.
This was the second go-around for Rush Street Interactive, the parent company of SugarHouse Sportsbook. Despite bettors winning the night, Mattias Stetz, COO of Rush Street Interactive, said it was a terrific way to end the season.
“Kansas City bettors had their faith tested in the fourth quarter before Patrick Mahomes lit a spark under the Chiefs yet again,” said Stetz.
“Both teams generated heavy betting interest and played like champions. The game kept bettors involved right up until the end.”
The company, which also operates the BetRivers app in Pennsylvania, reported that the Chiefs attracted late betting support. This included Kansas City drawing 60% of the moneyline handle by kickoff (up from 49% last Friday).
PointsBet Karma alert on Mahomes
Bettors who picked Mahomes to win game MVP honors cashed in winning tickets Sunday night.
But those who bet that the quarterback would finish with over 30.5 rushing yards did not make out as well. The final tally was 29 yards. The number was actually higher prior to Mahomes taking three knees to seal the victory.
PointsBet NJ decided not to hold it against the passer. Customers have the “Karma Kommittee” to thank.
Here’s the explanation:
🚨KARMA KOMMITTEE ALERT🚨
All bettors who took Mahomes Over 30.5 Rushing Yards have been refunded after he LOST 15 YARDS on three kneel downs to end the game🤢

The futures market for Super Bowl 55 is now open. The Chiefs are +700 at William Hill NJ. It puts them in the top spot with the 49ers and Baltimore Ravens.
The New York Giants and Jets are both +6000.
And with that, let the countdown to NFL betting season begin.
