PokerStars Wants NJ Online Poker Players To Reload Ahead Of The NJCOOP

Online poker players on PokerStars NJ have much to cheer about this October, as the site has rolled out a reload offer ahead of its major tournament series.

PokerStars NJ has reinforced its commitment to the New Jersey market with its first major reload bonus since going live back in March. Beginning October 10 and running until November 6, returning depositors are eligible for a one-time 100 percent deposit match up to $500.

The timing of the offer comes as little surprise, as beginning on Sunday, the operator will play host to the NJ Championship of Online Poker (NJCOOP) — an ambitious $1.2 million guaranteed tournament series spread across 43 events. More on the NJCOOP here.

The nuts and bolts of PokerStars’ reload bonus

In order to qualify, existing players must making a deposit of at least $20 using the bonus code NJ500. At the time of deposit, no additional funds will be credited to player accounts. Instead, bonus funds are cleared by participating in real-money cash games, tournaments and other games, like the exceedingly popular Spin & Go’s.

Players will unlock $5 of their bonus for every 100 VPPs earned. For most games, VPPs are accrued at a rate of 5.5 VPPs per $1 paid in rake.

The big impact of reload bonuses in New Jersey

Is a focus on Spin & Go’s the right play for PokerStars NJ?

Despite a tournament schedule that is merely on par with its competitors, and despite falling to second place in cash game traffic behind WSOP 888 Poker NJ, PokerStars has been able to maintain its market share lead in New Jersey.

The likely explanation: Its lottery sit & go variant continues to be a boon for the operator. Given this, a continued emphasis on Spin & Go’s makes sense.

On the flip side, there is reason to believe that PokerStars needs to change gears. For one, the site’s gross gaming revenues have dipped precipitously of late. As of July, it only holds a rather slim lead over WSOP/888 — a network that has tailored the crux of its promotions to cash-game players.

Furthermore, at least one of the site’s Spin & Go promotions — $100,000 Spin & Go Special Edition — is proving to be more of a stain on PokerStars than a positive for the operator. Not only does the promotion diminish the value of playing $10 Spin & Go’s for the average player, but it has been running so long (five months and counting), that players may begin to cry foul.

And lastly, it probably won’t be too long before PokerStars loses its monopoly on the format. Both 888 and Party Poker have recently introduced lottery sit & go variants on their international sites. If they carry over to the NJ online casino market, then PokerStars will be in a tough spot, especially so if it neglects its non-lottery sit & go players.

Should PokerStars insist on the unbalanced route, and continue to devote the majority of its marketing spend to Spin & Go’s, then it’s advised to run promos that will increase the monetary liquidity of the average net depositing player. The 5 Spins Challenge does accomplish this.

However, given the current market climate, I might suggest that the operator go a step further, by introducing hybrid promotions that encourage play across all of the site’s formats. That way Spin & Go’s can act as a primer for other games, driving liquidity to the formats that rely on traffic to thrive.

Problem Online Gambling In New Jersey: Rutgers Releases New Study

A new study reveals that responsible gaming tools on New Jerset online gambling sites are having an impact, but there’s still a need for greater awareness.

Rutgers Center for Gambling Studies has released the results of a study focused on problem gambling in New Jersey and the measures state regulated online gambling sites are taking to prevent it.

The study, entitled “Internet Gaming in New Jersey,” is part of a mandated responsible gaming initiative, funded by tax revenue generated by online operators. It marked the second consecutive year the study was conducted.

Account creation declines moderately

The report cites that in 2015, 378,103 individuals signed up for online gambling accounts in New Jersey, compared to 531,626 during 2014.

Although that may seem like an alarming drop-off, it isn’t unexpected, as the launch of the market in late 2013 brought with it an initial rush of signups. That early frenzy extended into the early months of the following year.

Taken in context, a dip of just 29 percent suggests that recent marketing initiatives have been successful in drawing a steady stream of new players to NJ online gambling sites.

Of the new registrants, a mere 107,535 (28 percent) players actually participated in games. This vast discrepancy between signups and actives is also not a wholly unexpected result, as a proportion of accounts were created from other states and countries, from which players can register for, but not play on, NJ regulated sites.

Continued issues on the payment processing front may have also factored in.

Of the registrants who did place wagers, 79,682 (74 percent) gambled on casino sites, with the highest representation among the 25-34 male demographic. Nearly 6.6 percent of these casino players listed their residence as outside of New Jersey.

More surprising, is that 69 percent of individuals who signed up for NJ online gambling in 2015, only registered one account. Just 12 percent had three accounts or more. New Jersey has a wide variety of online casino options, including Golden Nugget, Tropicana, and Mohegan Sun, among others.

The study offers no explanation as to why the distribution lies how it does, although one can presume that the strong ties between land-based and online casinos in New Jersey resulted in brand loyalty playing a significant role.

Responsible gaming features proving effective

Operator efforts to highlight their mandated responsible gaming options are not going unnoticed by patrons. According to the study, “a total of 13,422 gamblers used responsible gaming features,” representing 14.23 percent of gamblers.

Those in the 25-34 age demographic were far more prone to impose some sort of limitation on themselves, with a whopping 31.2 percent taking advantage of at least one responsible gaming feature. Usage was also high among the 35-44 (23.2 percent) and 45-54 (19.8 percent) age demographics.

Women were far more likely to restrict their play than men. As per the study:

Only 23% of online gamblers were women. However, 40% of RG users were women, indicating that 25% of women gamblers used RG features. In contrast, men made up 77% of all online gamblers but just 60% of those who used RG features; therefore, only 14% of men chose any form of limit-setting.

The responsible gaming measures available to players typically include:

  • Deposit limits (daily, weekly, monthly)
  • Loss limits
  • Time limits
  • Cool-off periods
  • Self-exclusion (1 or 5 years)

Of these, self-exclusion was the most popular. It’s also by far the most drastic measure, as a player who self-excludes from one site is automatically barred from participating in any NJ online gambling activity for a period of at least one year.

The study reveals that just under 10,000 players have self-excluded, and that a significant portion (~17 percent) utilized other responsible gaming vehicles (most commonly cool-offs) before opting to forbid themselves from playing.

By contrast, in 2014 deposit limits were the most popular RG feature harnessed, with 1.3 percent of players (6,851 total accounts) restricting the amount they could load on to a gambling site. The tables turned in 2015, when deposit limits were less than one-third as prevalent (3,085 players) as self-exclusions.

One plausible explanation for the changeover is that a proportion of players who imposed deposit limits in 2014 graduated to more severe measures by the following year.

Is problem gambling a bigger issue among online players?

The Rutgers study cites other reports, that claim problem gambling is more prevalent among online gamblers than those who only visit land-based venues.

According to a state-wide prevalence study, just 4.5 percent of land-based casino goers qualify as high-risk problem gamblers, as opposed to 14.3 percent of online-only players and 36.9 percent of players who frequent both online sites and land-based casinos.

On paper, it’s easy to see how some of the primary benefits of online gambling, listed as convenience, round-the-clock access, and comfort by the study, could also lead players down a slippery slope.

Yet, the high prevalence of at-risk mixed group gamblers versus online-only players suggests that online gambling is more an alternative medium for the problem gambler, and not necessarily a catalyst.

Going further, the study may be unjustifiably classifying online players as problem gamblers.

In a column for Online Poker Report, Steve Ruddock suggests that the data could be skewed by the abundance of online poker players and other professional advantage gamblers that “generally tick off a lot of the boxes for problem gambling behavior because of the frequency and size of their wagers, and not because they have the classic symptoms of problem gambling.”

And even if online gamblers are truly more prone to developing problems, the number of responsible gambling tools available and the ease of their use make it so at-risk gamblers are just a few clicks away from curtailing the frequency and/or the depth of their play.

The same cannot be said about high-risk gamblers who frequent land-based casinos, where:

  • Players can choose not to have their play tracked;
  • Problem gamblers must go through an exhaustive process in order to self-exclude;
  • Minors can more easily gain access;
  • Stakes are generally much higher compared to online.

Suggestions for the future

As part of its report, Rutgers offers several suggestions for the future, that will serve to further strengthen the NJ online gambling industry’s responsible gaming initiatives.

A couple of highlights:

  • As it said in 2014, Rutgers recommends improving responsible gaming “education, access, consistency, and branding.” It is indicated that players who are aware of and use responsible gaming tools before they begin gambling possess the “most modest play patterns of any group.”
  • Along the same lines, Rutgers suggests including responsible gambling “as part of registration for a player account and for continued usage for existing players,” thereby forcing players to at least acknowledge RG before making a first deposit.

The common thread here is awareness. As per Rutgers, placing RG features right where players can’t miss them will “likely increase the number of players who try various features and would also ensure they are fully informed about the range of options.”

Favorable Conditions Lead To Big Win For Borgata, Online Gambling In July

The land-based Borgata, along with online gambling, took full advantage of the five weekends in July, as both set new monthly revenue records.

A friendly calendar and record-setting performances from both the Borgata and online gambling helped propel Atlantic City revenue to its highest point in nearly two years.

Borgata, one of the sole shining stars in a casino landscape plagued by turmoil, generated a jaw-dropping $84.8 million for the month July. Of this amount, $80.8 million was accounted for by land-based revenue, with online gambling revenue contributing approximately $4 million.

It was the casino’s single biggest monthly take in its impressive 13-year run.

Almost predictably, NJ online gambling also set a revenue record in July, thus marking the eighth month in nine tries that it has set new a benchmark. The industry’s 17 casino and poker sites generated a total of $17.37 million in gross gaming revenue.

And while these figures, as well as Atlantic City’s total July revenue of $275.3 million, were undoubtedly inflated by the presence of a rare fifth weekend, it’s starting to look more and more like the struggling city is slowly turning the corner.

Winners and losers

Besides the Borgata (13 percent year-on-year growth), a handful of other land-based casinos made the grade in July.

In terms of raw percentage gain, Tropicana was the biggest land-based winner, with year-on-year-revenue climbing 14 percent.

Land-based properties Caesars, the Golden Nugget and Resorts all experienced single-digit percentage gains varying between 6 and 8 percent. Golden Nugget also made significant headway on the online casino front, setting a new monthly record for an individual license holder with $3,791,138.

On the flip side, Harrah’s and Bally’s both experienced a 5 percent year-on-year decline, while Trump Taj Mahal revenue fell by 8 percent.

The latter is readying to shutter its doors after Labor Day. Billionaire investor and Taj owner Carl Icahn pulled the plug in early August — approximately one month after casino workers from the Local 54 of the Unite-HERE union went on strike.

YTD revenue paint the real picture

Admittedly, it’s easy to write off Atlantic City’s 6.9 percent YoY uptick as a fluke; a byproduct of favorable shore weather and the inclusion of a fifth weekend. However, there’s little denying the progress AC had made overall this year.

Year-to-date land-based revenue is up 1.5 percent for the first seven months of 2016. Factor in online gambling, and that figure climbs to 3.26 percent.

While these figures may seem less than impressive, consider that Atlantic City had seen its revenue effectively slashed by half from its 2006 to 2015. Given this, any sign of growth or even stabilization should be viewed as a big positive.

Trump Taj shuttering not necessarily a negative

The consolidation of the Atlantic City casino market is nothing new. In 2014, four casinos (Atlantic Club, Trump Plaza, Showboat, Revel) shuttered their doors, reducing the total number of gambling properties from 12 to eight.

Interestingly, the impact has not been as negative as some may have feared.

To illustrate: For the first seven months of 2014 (before three of the four now defunct casino closed shop), AC generated $1.623 billion in gross gaming revenue. For the same time frame in 2016, operators took in $1.522 billion, representing a smallish 6.25 percent falloff.

At the time of their closure, the now shuttered casinos accounted for 13.1 percent of AC, meaning that the city has recouped more than half of the raw revenue that was lost.

Golden Nugget and Resorts, two casinos that have taken an exceedingly aggressive position in recent years, benefited the most, with revenue rising 23 percent and 25 percent, respectively, from two years ago to now. Borgata (+15 percent) and Tropicana (+7.5 percent) too, have reaped significant gains since the closures.

Given historical trends, it seems likely that the closure of Trump Taj will further bolster the remaining casinos, which may prove critical if NJ residents pass a referendum this November that will permit the construction of land-based casinos in the northern end of the state.

Online gambling a bigger asset than ever before

Of course, the market wouldn’t nearly be in as good as shape if it weren’t for online gambling.

In July 2014, revenue from online gambling sites comprised just 3.8 percent of total AC revenue. That figure has since swelled to 6.7 percent.

For perspective, online gambling took in just a few hundred thousand dollars less in July than both Trump Taj and Resorts. Should the industry grow by another 15 percent, it’ll threaten to generate more monthly revenue than Bally’s and the Golden Nugget.

The startling growth of online gambling is also the primary reason why AC generated more revenue in July 2016 than two years prior. Back then, land-based casinos generated $264.2 million. Last month, they only took in $257.9 million, but online gambling grew by more than enough to cover the gap.

Given recent trends, it’s not out of the question that online gambling will account for an even more significant portion of AC revenue in the fall months.
