Tigers Wild With Tonight’s National Championship Game Betting

NJ sportsbooks, FanDuel and DraftKings, offering several ways to bet on LSU Tigers vs Clemson Tigers. Early Masters betting on Tigers Woods also in play.

The College Football Playoff National Championship game is tonight in New Orleans. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. EST on ESPN.

The culmination of college football betting season comes down to the No. 1 LSU Tigers versus the No. 3 Clemson Tigers.

FanDuel Sportsbook has LSU as a 5.5-point favorite. Here is the wagering breakdown as of Friday:

  • 82% of bets and 83% of the money for LSU is on the spread.
  • 68% of bets and 50% of the money for Clemson is on the moneyline.
  • 59% of bets and 50% of the money is on the over.

Of course, NJ sports betting customers have options beyond the traditional point spreads, moneylines and total points.

FanDuel offering touchdown promo

There is no doubt that touchdowns will play a major factor. LSU is averaging 48.9 points per game. Clemson is scoring 45.3 a contest. The over/under is 67.5.

It makes perfect sense that FanDuel would build a promo around scoring with its college football touchdown bonus

Here’s how it works:

  • Place a pregame wager against the spread of $25 or more.
  • If the bet wins, earn $5 in site credit for every touchdown scored by the selected team.
  • The max payout is $25.

But it’s not the only wager in which touchdowns will come into play. Total points (67.5) are a major factor with the two odds boosts:

  • LSU to win and 70-plus total points score (now paying +270).
  • Clemson to win and 70-plus total points scored (now paying +580).

Tiger Woods and the Tigers

It seems only fitting when the Tigers are playing the Tigers, somehow, someway that Tigers Woods enters the equation. Of course, he is not playing today.

DraftKings has posted six odds boosts, two of which fall under the Tiger and Tiger category. Let’s call it very early Masters’ betting (the tournament takes place April 9-12):

  • Clemson Tigers to win and Woods to win the Masters (now paying +3300).
  • LSU Tigers to win and Woods to win the Masters (now paying +1600).

Those who don’t like Tiger’s chances can stick with the Tigers:

  • First offensive play to be a pass attempt (now paying +105).
  • Clemson to score first, total game points over 69.5, and Clemson to win (now paying +760).
  • LSU to score first, total game points over 69.5, and LSU to win (now paying +365).
  • Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow to record over 6.5 combined passing touchdowns (now paying +140).

So, either way, the Tigers are a safe bet tonight.

College Football Finals Preview: Catch A Tiger By Its Tail

A snapshot look at the game details, lines and some of the important facts and trends for the National Championship Game at NJ sportsbooks.

The college football bowl season culminates Monday night when LSU faces Clemson in the National Championship.

It wasn’t that long ago, back in the BCS era (pre-2014), where many fans clamored for some type of college football playoff. Now that a 4-team playoff is in place, many now suggest that there needs to be more than 4 teams involved.

Flawed system or not, this year’s national championship game features the two best teams squaring off, SEC Champ LSU Tigers (14-0) vs ACC Champ Clemson Tigers (14-0).

New Jersey sports betting customers will have plenty of wagering options to get involved in the action on Monday night.

Here is a snapshot look at the game details, lines and some of the important facts and trends for the National Championship Game.

NCAA College Football Championship facts

National Championships

  • LSU: 3 (1958, 2003 and 2007)
  • Clemson: 3 (1981, 2016 and 2018)

The Superdome

The Superdome in New Orleans has hosted four national championship games since 2004. LSU has appeared in all of them. The Tigers won in 2004 and 2007 and lost to Alabama in 2011.

Resting Up

In the previous National Championship games, the average time between the semi-final game and championship was 10 days. This year it will be 16 days.

Previous Clemson vs LSU Meetings

This will be the only the 4th time Clemson and LSU have squared off.  All previous meetings have been in bowl games.

LSU holds a 2-1 series edge winning the 1959 Sugar Bowl 7-0 and the 1996 Peach Bowl 10-7.

In the last meeting of the 2 teams, Clemson beat LSU 25-24 in the 2012 Chick-Fil-A Bowl.

Holding on to the Lead

The last team to hold a lead over LSU was Auburn, which led 13-10 in the third quarter of their October 26th match-up.

Since then, 6 LSU opponents have come and gone, including 3 who were ranked in the top 4 of the national polls at the time, and LSU has never trailed in any of the games.

Clemson saw its 34-quarter streak of leading its opponent, which dated back to the second quarter of the Sept. 28 game against North Carolina, ended when the Tigers fell behind 16-0 against Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.

Amazing Stats

Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence has not thrown an interception in his last 202 pass attempts.

Clemson has turned the ball exactly 1 time since October 19th.

LSU is the first team in college football history to produce a 5,000-yard passer (QB Joe Burrow), 1,000-yard rusher( RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire), and two 1,000-yard receivers (WR Ja’Marr Chase and WR Justin Jefferson) in the same season.

Awards Locker

LSU QB Joe Burrow won the Heisman Trophy, given to the best individual player in college football.

Burrow also won:

  • Maxwell and Walter Camp Awards (both of which hold a similar set of criteria as the Heisman
  • Davey O’Brien Award (given to the top quarterback in the country)
  • Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award

While Burrow’s awards shelf is full, he wasn’t the only LSU Tiger to receive post-season accolades.

Safety Grant Delpit won the Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back, Ja’Marr Chase took home the Biletnikoff Award given to the nation’s top wide receiver, and the Tigers’ offensive line won the Joe Moore Award, given to the nation’s top unit.

Head coach Ed Orgeron has been honored as National Coach of the Year from 3 different sources and passing coordinator Joe Brady earned the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant.

For Clemson, there was only one national award winner this season, All-American Isaiah Simmons, who won the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker.

Offensively and Defensively Speaking

In terms of net yards per play, LSU’s offense averaged 7.9 yards per play (#2 in the country) and Clemson averaged 7.5 yards per play (#4 in the country).

On the defensive side of the ball, Clemson allowed an average of 4.1 yards per play (#2 in the country) while LSU has surrendered 5.05 yards per snap (#27 in the country).

NJ Sportsbooks college bowl betting lines

Sports betting apps in New Jersey predict close finishes in all four contests. With the lines set, the key to betting wisely is information. There are a few important matters that bettors should take note of.

Betting on the Citrus Bowl

One of the games slated for 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday, January 1 features a Big Ten-SEC tumble. The Alabama Crimson Tide and Michigan Wolverines clash in the 2020 Citrus Bowl.

Bama is the favorite in this one as far as legal sports betting in New Jersey goes.

Bama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa won’t play in this game but the Crimson Tide have history on their side. Alabama is 6-1 straight up and against the spread in its last seven games against a Big Ten opponent.

To strengthen the case for the Tide, Michigan is a miserable 0-16 SU and 7-9 ATS over its previous 16 contests in which the opposition was favored.

Mac Jones has filled in admirably for Tagovailoa, throwing for over 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns against just three interceptions.

Betting on the Outback Bowl

The other 1 p.m. ET contest is also a Big Ten vs. SEC match, and it involves another team from the Heart of Dixie. The Auburn Tigers face the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the 2020 Outback Bowl.

The script stays consistent, as once again the SEC team is favored.

While Minnesota’s defense struggled in its final three regular-season games, its reputation shows in the point total. In five of the last six games involving the Golden Gophers, the over was hit.

The Tigers, meanwhile, are 11-1 SU and 10-2 ATS in their last 12 games as favorites. While there may be some continuity concern with head coach Gus Malzahn calling the plays on offense himself, the over for this game looks like a can’t miss.

Betting on the Rose Bowl

For Big Ten fans, New Year’s Day 2020 is a treat. A third team from that conference, Wisconsin, faces Oregon out of the Pac-12 in the Rose Bowl at 5 p.m. ET.

This game represents the first of those three instances in which the Big Ten team is favored, however. That spread is smaller than its predecessors, as Garden State books predict a close one.

The Rose Bowl points to the opposite conclusion. The Badgers and Ducks both finished the season with top-1o defenses and boast one of the best defensive lines (Oregon) and secondaries (Wisconsin) in the nation.

Both teams went 7-6 on the Under during the regular season. While that’s not a strong record, coupled with the personnel it’s probably the safest bet out of this game.

Betting on the Sugar Bowl

The SEC gets a third appearance in the 8:45 p.m. ET nightcap. The Sugar Bowl pits Baylor against Georgia this year.

The Big 12 team is the underdog in its lone New Year’s Day slot. Again, New Jersey sportsbooks call for a tight contest.

Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer‘s recovery from the concussion he suffered in the Big 12 title game is the biggest storyline for the Sugar Bowl. If Brewer can’t go, inexperienced Gerry Bohannon will see his second consecutive big-game start for the Bears.

No matter who starts for Baylor, Georgia’s chances will depend on their own quarterback’s performance. Jake Fromm has a great opportunity to not only end his junior campaign on a high note but perhaps improve his NFL Draft stock in this one as well.

Regardless of the outcomes of all four of these games, New Jersey college football betting fans should see some college football betting wins. Those who do will see their 2020 start off with a bang.
